About the Author
Guidebook writer and Africa expert Philip Briggs first backpacked through East Africa in 1986. He undertook a pioneering 4-month trip to Ethiopia in 1994, only two years after the end of the civil war that brought about the fall of the oppressive Derg dictatorship, to research the first edition of the Bradt guide to this fascinating and but then little-known country. He has since returned to Ethiopia on several occasions to research subsequent editions of the Bradt guide, in the process documenting the country's transformation from one of Africa's most challenging travel goals to a bona fide tourist destination. Ethiopia aside, Philip has written and co-authored more than a dozen Bradt guides to other destinations, most of them in Africa, and he has contributed to many other books, travel and wildlife magazines.

By the second paragraph of the introduction to this guide, you know everything you need to know about the author’s condescending views on race and gender. Make the mistake, as we did, of venturing further and the “witty†insults directed toward Ethiopia and Ethiopians pile up quickly. If you are looking for a guide steeped in colonial attitudes that is geared toward avoiding anything challenging or uncomfortable about Travel abroad, then by all means, order this one. If you actually want to experience the country, look elsewhere. As there was no way we could share this guide with our daughter on a family trip, we returned it.
Review:I travelled to and lived in Ethiopia from 2013-2015 and Bradts Ethiopia guidebook was one of the first and only books I purchased to bring with me abroad. I found the historical and cultural information easy to understand and helpful. Even after living in Ethiopia for some time, the guide was invaluable when planning trips outside of the small town I lived in. The guide helped me on multiple occasions, navigating my way around places like Hawassa, shasamene, rock hewn churches in Tirgray, the Bale mountains, Harar and especially Addis Ababa. Knowing where and when to catch local transportation, the location and quality of hotels and restaurants and markets were helped me feel safe and confident. The practical information; cultural manners/dress, traveling as a single woman, amenities available in different cities/towns, the maps, getting around, etc is thorough, well researched, spot on and reliable.I recommend this guide to anyone traveling to or spending an extended amount of time in Ethiopia.
The Bradt guide is definitely the best guide book for Ethiopia. When I started traveling in Ethiopia, I used the Lonely Planet (because I'm on the Kindle Unlimited), but I found the information of the Lonely Planet very superficial. Then many other travelers were using the Bradt guide on the road, I compared different sections, especially those places I've just been, I can honestly confirm that your guidebook is way much better.I'm very surprised by the 1-star review, this is very unfair for an author who has a strong affection for the country, it's also not a fair review for other travelers who are searching for a good travel companion book. I'm going to leave a 5-star review for your book, and to offset any unfair negative review. For English speakers, if you come to Ethiopia, this is probably the best guide book you can find on the market, it'll be a miss if you decide not to use this book just because of an unfair one-star review (who just read one paragraph, perhaps?).
I have been using Bradt Guides for over 10 years now since my first trip to Africa in 2008. I used the Bradt Ethiopia guide on my trip to Ethiopia and it was very detailed on both practical points and history. I used it both to plan out my trip before departure, and as a reference and learning tool en route, especially for learning about the history of the monasteries and the art therein. Really the only downside is that it's such a tome, it's heavy to carry around in your day pack! But it definitely has all the information you need in one place.
Bradt travel guide for Ethiopia remains the best guidebook for this country. in addition to providing the as much up-to-date information on accommodation, food and transport as you can expect from a print book these days, it also gives wonderful insights into countries history, people, culture and nature. Combined with the online updates that the author provides via social media and on a wordpress blog, this remains to be my go to book (and I live in Ethiopia, so I am quite well informed as it is). I now own 4 editions of this book, and this latest one is still a worthwhile purchase. It is a must have if you're traveling to Ethiopia.
We lived in Ethiopia for 5 years and this was not only the book we used when traveling out of the city but also the book we recommended to everyone considering or planning a trip to Ethiopia. It is so well researched and helpful and the newest version is even better than before!
This guidebook was recommended to me while I was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ethiopia. Great information for every kind of travel - especially options for volunteers/folks on a budget. Great background information and realistic about travel for foreigners in Ethiopia.
